US Department of Health and Human Services Tribal Consultation on Mandatory Funding Approaches for the Indian Health Service

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Becerra released a Dear Tribal Leader Letter (DTLL) to initiate two consultation sessions with Tribal leaders on recommendations for mandatory funding approaches for the Indian Health Service (IHS). Along with questions and concerns, the Secretary is interested in hearing from Tribal leaders on the following three questions.
1. What is the appropriate funding level for a mandatory funding proposal?
2. What is the appropriate growth pattern for a mandatory funding proposal?
3. What is the appropriate appropriations structure for a mandatory funding proposal?

The National Indian Health Board (NIHB) has long supported mandatory appropriations. NIHB’s 2021 Legislative and Policy Agenda calls on Congress to enact mandatory appropriations for IHS.
NIHB will host a Tribal Caucus on the mandatory funding approaches before the consultation session. A date and time are forthcoming.
