DOJ Training Opportunity – Forensic Sciences Seminar, October 29-31, 2019

The National Indian Country Training Initiative (NICTI), in collaboration with the Office of the Deputy Attorney General and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, is pleased to announce the Forensic Science Seminar.  The seminar will be held October 29-31, 2019, at the National Advocacy Center in Columbia, SC.  Travel related expenses will be covered by the Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Education.

This high level crime scene seminar is for experienced prosecutors and law enforcement personnel who investigate and prosecute violent crime cases.  Priority will be given to those individuals who work violent crime cases in tribal communities.  Topics to be covered include the following: evidence identification, collection, documentation and elimination samples; the science behind DNA, including an overview of probabilistic genotyping, with a focus on STRMix mixture interpretation software and current admissibility issues; the use of likelihood ratios for assessing the weight of DNA evidence; an overview of pattern comparison evidence and current admissibility issues; DOJ forensic science policy initiatives, including Uniform Language for Testimony and Reports and Testimony Monitoring, discovery and ethical issues concerning forensic science; and models for interagency communication among prosecutors, law enforcement, and crime laboratories.

Note for Supervisors/Training Officials:  If you are submitting more than one nomination form for your office, please prioritize your list of nominees by ranking each nomination in your order of preference (i.e., 1 of 2, 2 of 2).  The submitted ranking order will be considered in the selection process.  Nomination forms are due by August 30, 2019.

The NICTI will review all nominations and the NICTI will send an e-mail advising nominees of their selection on or about September 13, 2019.  Selected nominees will also receive information on how to book travel and lodging.
