IHS Announces New Policy for Prescribers on Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs

Today, July 6, 2016, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), announced a new agency-wide policy effective immediately that requires Indian Health Service (IHS) opioid prescribers to check their state Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) database prior to prescribing and dispensing opioids for pain treatment.

With this policy, IHS opioid prescribers will utilize state PDMPs as a clinical tool for appropriate pain management, identifying patients who may have a problem with opioid use and helping prevent diversion of prescription drugs.
